As an Early Years teacher, my hearing was my superpower—something I prided myself on. I could pinpoint every sound in my classroom, even the tiniest whispers. But in an instant, everything changed, and I could no longer rely on my hearing.
I didn’t even know that sudden hearing loss was a thing, let alone an emergency. When I lost hearing in my left ear, I assumed it was temporary. I was busy preparing for a new school year and kept telling myself, “Tomorrow will be better.” But each day passed, and my hearing didn’t return.
It wasn’t until 8 days later that I finally saw a doctor. She dismissed my concerns, saying my ears looked fine and suggested nasal spray and ibuprofen. Unfortunately, she didn’t recognize the urgency of the situation.
18 days after the onset of my symptoms, I was finally seen by an ENT specialist and diagnosed with profound sudden hearing loss in my left ear. By then, I had missed the critical 24–48 hour treatment window when steroids are most effective, and I was out of the two-week timeframe after which the chances of recovery decreases significantly. Although I received treatment after my diagnosis, it was too late for it to have the best chance of restoring my hearing.
Adapting to Life with Sudden Hearing Loss
The impact of sudden hearing loss turned my life upside down. I had to adjust to single-sided deafness, which led to both practical and emotional challenges. Here’s what I faced:
- No sense of direction: I couldn’t tell where sounds were coming from.
- Struggles in noisy environments: Conversations became exhausting, especially in crowds.
- Music lost its depth: The rich stereo sound I loved was gone.
- Tinnitus and sound sensitivity: Ironically, my silence was replaced with constant ringing in my deaf ear, and everyday sounds became painful.
- Balance issues: Navigating busy spaces became overwhelming.
- Hearing loss grief: I needed to grieve my lost sound before determining how to move forward.
- A drop in confidence: It took time for me to figure out how to live well with hearing loss.
I kept asking myself: Why me? What could I have done differently? Will I ever adjust?
Raising Awareness and Offering Support
For the past eight years, I’ve made it my mission to raise awareness about sudden hearing loss and the importance of seeking prompt treatment. Through my personal blog, online support group, coaching, and this website, I’ve connected with thousands of people who are navigating the same struggles.
Now, I have something exciting to share!
Announcing Our New Book: A Guide to Navigating Sudden Hearing Loss
This World Hearing Day, I’m proud to announce that I’ve co-authored a book with audiologist Andrea Simonson and psychotherapist Caroline Norman.
Andrea, Caroline, and I connected through our shared experience with sudden hearing loss—Caroline lived through it firsthand, while Andrea supported her husband on his journey. Though our paths were different, we all faced the practical and emotional rollercoaster that comes with this condition.
In our book, we blend research-backed insights with personal stories from over 60 people worldwide, providing support, hope, and practical guidance.
The book covers:
- The emotional and practical challenges of sudden hearing loss
- What to expect at medical appointments and how to advocate for yourself
- Dealing with misdiagnoses and frustrating “what if” questions
- Coping with tinnitus, balance issues, and emotional struggles
- Exploring solutions such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and learning to adapt
Our goal in writing this book is to help everyone affected by sudden hearing loss feel supported, informed, and empowered. We hope this book becomes a vital resource for individuals and families affected by sudden hearing loss, as well as healthcare professionals who can help identify and treat the condition quickly.
I hope you’ll share in our excitement as we bring this book to life!
